Star E900 Maintenance Guide: Daily, Weekly & Monthly Care

The Star E900 Electric Handpiece System splits into two very different maintenance needs: the reusable attachments, which get cleaned and sterilized like any other handpiece, and the motor and control unit, which is an electric medical device with its own care requirements. Treating them the same way is one of the more common mistakes practices make. For repair-related symptoms rather than routine care, see our companion Star E900 Repair & Service Guide.

Two components, two sets of rules: what sterilizes the attachment would damage the motor.

Layer One: Daily Care (Every Single Use)

This is the layer that matters most for keeping both the motor and attachments reliable day to day.

DAILY CHECKLIST

☐ Confirm the attachment is seated and locked securely onto the motor before use

☐ Confirm the bur is fully seated and the chuck grips securely, where applicable

☐ Wipe down the motor, control unit, and cabling per manufacturer instructions after use

☐ Clean and lubricate attachments per the manufacturer's specific instructions for that attachment

☐ Sterilize attachments using the validated cycle for that specific attachment before reuse

Layer Two: Weekly Care

WEEKLY CHECKLIST

☐ Check that attachments still seat onto the motor snugly, without excess play

☐ Review any on-screen temperature or motor-replacement notifications from the past week

☐ Inspect cabling and tubing for visible wear

☐ Confirm chucks are still gripping burs securely under normal use

Layer Three: Monthly Care

MONTHLY CHECKLIST

☐ Review runtime hours logged per profile through the web application interface

☐ Confirm RFID asset tracking is registering correctly with your reader system, if in use

☐ Test each attachment in active use against its expected speed and performance

☐ Note which attachments are approaching the point where professional inspection makes sense

The Care Map: Motor vs. Attachment

Because the E900 combines an electric motor with sterilizable attachments, it helps to think of care as two separate tracks:

Motor & Control Unit

An electric medical device. Follow the manufacturer's specific cleaning and disinfection instructions rather than treating it like a standard autoclavable handpiece.

Attachments (1:5, Straight, AL-L)

Cleaned, lubricated, and sterilized following the specific instructions for that attachment type, similar to other dental handpieces.

Cabling & Tubing

Not typically sterilized, but worth a regular visual check for wear, since RFID communication runs through it.

Temperature Sensor (1:5 Attachment)

Not user-serviceable, but worth noting if warnings become frequent, since this can signal turbine wear.

Cleaning: Following the Manufacturer's Specific Instructions

Unlike a fully autoclavable air-driven handpiece, the E900 motor and control unit are electric components. DENTALEZ's instructions for use specify that supply of spare parts, service, and maintenance should be carried out by authorized personnel, which extends to how the motor itself should be cleaned. Always follow the specific instructions provided for your motor and control unit rather than assuming standard handpiece sterilization applies.

Duty Cycle: Respecting the Motor's Operating Limits

DENTALEZ's documentation notes that the motor's feasible limit load is around 30 seconds of continuous operation at full load and maximum speed, with a realistic procedure lasting anywhere from several seconds to several minutes without reaching that maximum current draw. In practical terms, this means the motor is built for normal clinical use patterns, not sustained maximum-load operation, and working within that pattern helps avoid unnecessary strain.

Storage Between Uses

Store the motor, control unit, and attachments according to the manufacturer's guidance, keeping cabling untangled and protected from being knocked. Since the system tracks runtime hours per profile, consistent storage and handling also makes it easier to keep accurate records for each attachment.Print Shipping Label

Maintenance Mistakes to Avoid

A side-by-side look at habits worth changing:

INSTEAD OF	TRY THIS
Treating the motor unit like a standard autoclavable handpiece	Follow the manufacturer's specific cleaning instructions for the motor and control unit
Ignoring a recurring temperature notification on the 1:5 attachment	Have it checked, since this can point to turbine wear rather than a one-off event
Skipping attachment lubrication because the system feels different from air-driven handpieces	Lubricate attachments per manufacturer instructions before sterilization, just like other handpieces
Running procedures well beyond the motor's typical duty pattern	Work within normal clinical use patterns to avoid unnecessary strain on the motor
Losing track of which attachment is due for professional inspection	Use the logged runtime hours per profile to plan ahead

Extending the Lifespan of Your Star E900 System

Consistent, correct care of both the motor and the attachments, combined with attention to on-screen notifications rather than ignoring them, does more for the system's lifespan than any single habit. DENTALEZ's own guidance to return the system every two years for inspection is worth building into your practice's equipment calendar. If a maintained system still shows signs of a fault, our Star E900 Repair & Service Guide covers what happens next.

What Practices Are Saying

★★★★★

"We'd been cleaning the motor unit the same way as our attachments until this clarified the difference. Small change, but an important one."

— Sterilization Lead, Multi-Provider Practice

★★★★★

"The runtime-hours tracking through the web app has made it much easier to plan when attachments need attention."

— Practice Owner, Endodontic Practice

★★★★☆

"Useful reminder about the duty cycle. We weren't aware there was a practical operating limit to be mindful of."

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I autoclave the entire Star E900 motor unit?

The motor and control unit are electric components and should be cleaned according to the manufacturer's specific instructions rather than assumed to be fully autoclavable like a standard handpiece attachment.

How often should attachments be lubricated?

Follow the manufacturer's specific lubrication guidance for each attachment type before sterilization, similar to other dental handpieces.

What does the runtime-hours tracking actually help with?

Logged runtime per profile, viewable through the web application, helps a practice plan preventive attention for specific attachments before a failure occurs.
