Premium Materials Still Need an Ordinary Routine

A titanium sleeve and DLC-coated bearings make the T1 Energo and T1 Energo S more resistant to wear than Dentsply Sirona's basic-class Energo models, but resistant isn't the same as exempt.

The Six-Step Manual Routine

Flush the handpiece's water and air lines by running it on the unit with water for 20 to 30 seconds, then remove the bur using safe methods.

Remove the electric attachment from its motor.

Clean the exterior with Midwest Plus Cleaner, scrubbing under running water with a soft sponge to remove external debris and bioburden, paying close attention to the fiber optic lens so it doesn't become obstructed.

Connect the attachment (without a bur) to the appropriate maintenance adapter, place the Midwest Plus Aerosol Spray nozzle fully into the attachment, cover the head with a paper or lint-free towel, and spray for 2 full seconds.

Cover the head again and expel with air for a minimum of 30 seconds, or until no more oil appears on the towel.

Wipe off excess lubricant with a clean paper or lint-free towel, place the instrument in a sterilization pouch, and sterilize in a steam sterilizer.

The Weekly Step That's Easy to Skip

Separately from the per-use routine above, Dentsply Sirona specifies weekly chuck maintenance: using an oil dropper or Midwest Plus Aerosol Spray to lubricate the chuck and the operatory coupler O-rings once per week. This should be performed before the regular lubrication step, specifically so any excess oil has a chance to be expelled rather than sitting trapped inside.

Why this matters more on the T1 line

The T1's easy-activation chuck is engineered around roughly 35 newtons of operating force. A chuck that isn't getting its weekly lubrication will drift away from that smooth, low-force feel well before anything else on the handpiece shows signs of wear.

Sterilization Basics

Both gravity and dynamic air removal steam sterilizers are acceptable

Always refer to the item-specific instructions for use for exact sterilization parameters rather than assuming one cycle fits every Energo model

Keep the attachment in its sterilization pouch until it's actually time to use it

Daily Habits Worth Building In

Before the First Patient of the Day

Examine the handpiece for any visible damage. This is a stated requirement before each use, not an optional check

Confirm the chuck activates smoothly and holds a test bur securely

Between Patients

Run the full six-step manual routine, or the equivalent Automate cycle, every time, not an abbreviated version on busy days

Never apply pressure to the chuck release button while the handpiece is rotating

At the End of the Day

Confirm every T1 Energo or T1 Energo S attachment in rotation has gone through a full cycle, not just a wipe-down

Store sterilized attachments in their pouches, in a dry, dust-free location

What Actually Extends This Handpiece's Lifespan

Two habits matter more than anything else for the T1 line specifically: never skipping the weekly chuck lubrication, and never reaching for a disinfectant wipe or alcohol out of convenience. Both are easy mistakes to make precisely because the titanium build and DLC bearing coating make the handpiece feel more durable than it is against the wrong cleaning product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the weekly chuck maintenance really separate from the per-patient cleaning cycle?

Yes, Dentsply Sirona documents it as its own step, performed once a week and specifically before the regular lubrication process, not folded into the between-patient routine.

Can I use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer wipe if I'm out of Midwest Plus Cleaner?

No. Dentsply Sirona's own guidance is explicit that the handpiece should never be sprayed, wiped, or soaked in disinfectants or alcohol; water and a handpiece-safe surfactant are the only approved combination.
