LubeFree Doesn't Mean No Maintenance

The Titan E Motor is LubeFree by design, which removes one step compared to older low-speed motors, but StarDental's own instruction manual still sets out a specific cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization routine for the motor and swivel. Following it is what keeps the motor's warranty and performance intact.

Manufacturer requirement

The handpiece motor must be cleaned and sterilized before first use and between every patient use.

After Every Patient

Wear puncture-resistant gloves and protective eyewear before handling the used motor.
Flush air by running the handpiece motor for 20 seconds.
Remove the motor from the swivel or tubing, as applicable.
Clean all internal surfaces at the rear of the motor with a cotton swab soaked in isopropyl alcohol until visibly clean.
Clean all external surfaces using a small toothbrush with isopropyl alcohol.
Place the motor in standard sterilization packaging, large enough to avoid stressing the seals, and process per the parameters below.

Cleaning the Swivel Connection

To keep the swivel connector operating smoothly: clean all internal surfaces of the motor with an isopropyl-alcohol-soaked cotton swab until clean, then clean the area around the bearing and spring assembly at the rear of the swivel using isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush. Dry both using syringe air.

There Is No Lubrication Step

LubeFree by design

The Titan E Motor requires no lubrication. If sluggish operation appears, it's addressed as a debris issue, not a lubrication gap.

When debris from a delivery system's drive-air tubing collects inside the motor and causes sluggish operation, StarDental's documented fix is:

Place 3 drops of DentaLube II into the drive-air tube of the motor.
Alternately operate the motor in forward and reverse to circulate the lubricant and clear the debris.

Increase dry-cycle time if any moisture is present after the standard cycle
Store in the sterilization bag until ready to use
Do not exceed your sterilizer manufacturer's guidelines for load capacity
Use only paper or paper/plastic sterilization bags
Ensure the pack is large enough to contain the item without stressing the seals

Weekly and Periodic Checks

Coupler tightness: the motor-to-tubing joint loosens over time and results in air leakage and power loss if left unchecked; inspect it periodically rather than waiting for a symptom.
Seal and O-ring condition: visually inspect the silicone rubber seal and swivel O-rings for early brittleness or wear.
Air pressure verification: confirm drive air reads 40 to 45 psi at the delivery head with the motor running at full forward speed.
General wear check: StarDental's documentation calls for routine checks for corrosion and worn parts, with replacement on an as-needed basis rather than a fixed schedule.

Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping the post-patient 20-second air flush before cleaning
