W&H Alegra HE-43 Maintenance: A Practical Routine for Keeping a Straight Handpiece Reliable

A handpiece maintenance routine can become so familiar that staff stop really looking at the instrument.

The HE-43 gets cleaned.

It gets processed.

It goes back into the tray.

Done.

But there is another part of maintenance that takes almost no extra time:

checking whether the handpiece still feels normal.

The W&H Alegra HE-43 is a 1:1 straight handpiece with a twist-tension chuck for Ø2.35 mm handpiece and contra-angle burs. W&H lists a maximum drive speed of 40,000 rpm and an ISO 3964 motor connection.

That makes routine inspection of the chuck, rotation and connection particularly useful.

The HE-43 “Before It Goes Back” Check

Instead of thinking of maintenance as only cleaning and lubrication, use this simple sequence:

Clean → Maintain → Inspect → Return to service

The inspection step is where early warning signs are often caught.

Check the bur

Remove the bur and inspect the shank.

Look for:

	visible damage,

	contamination,

	unusual wear,

	incorrect size,

or anything that could affect secure retention.

The HE-43 is designed for Ø2.35 mm handpiece and contra-angle burs, so don't use an incorrect instrument simply because it appears to fit.

Pay Attention to the Twist Chuck

The twist-tension chuck is one of the most important areas to feel during routine handling.

You are not trying to diagnose an internal chuck failure.

You're asking:

“Does this feel the same as it normally does?”

Watch for:

	unusual looseness,

	excessive resistance,

	inconsistent tension,

	difficulty securing the bur,

or a change in the way the chuck operates.

If something feels different, don't ignore it.

The W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Maintenance Guide provides additional Alegra maintenance guidance that can help you review your routine.

Don't Confuse Cleaning With Maintenance

A clean-looking handpiece is not automatically a well-maintained handpiece. Your process should address the manufacturer's applicable cleaning, lubrication, sterilization and handling requirements. Avoid improvising with products or methods simply because they worked on another handpiece.

RepairGuru's Simple Do's and Don'ts for Handpiece Care is a useful general reminder: use appropriate cleaners and lubricants, follow correct sterilization procedures and don't ignore early wear.

For model-specific processing, always follow the current W&H instructions.

Listen to the HE-43

Here is a maintenance step that costs nothing:

listen.

If the HE-43 normally sounds smooth and suddenly becomes noticeably louder, rougher or more irregular, make a note of it. You don't need to identify the failed component yourself. You simply need to recognize that the baseline has changed.

If you're unsure whether the sound represents a maintenance issue or a developing mechanical problem, the W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Troubleshooting Guide can help you work through the symptom logically.

Don't Ignore the Motor Connection

The HE-43 uses an ISO 3964 motor connection. During routine handling, pay attention to whether the connection feels secure and whether the handpiece behaves normally when attached. If you notice instability, unusual movement or an inconsistent connection, don't compensate by forcing or repeatedly reconnecting the instrument. Document what you noticed and have it assessed if the problem persists.

A Five-Point HE-43 Maintenance Check

 Check

 What to look for

 Bur

 Correct size and good condition

 Chuck

 Normal twist tension and retention

 Smooth, familiar feel

 Connection

 Secure and consistent

This takes much less time than dealing with an unexpected handpiece failure later.

When Maintenance Is No Longer Enough

Suppose the HE-43 develops a rough sound. You perform the normal maintenance process. The sound improves. Two days later, it returns. That recurrence is important. Don't simply repeat the same process indefinitely. Review the W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Repair Guide and consider whether the instrument needs professional inspection. If the problem is affecting clinical use, you can request W&H handpiece repair rather than waiting for the symptom to become a complete failure.

Build One Simple Staff Habit

If several staff members handle the same HE-43, give everyone one instruction:

If it feels different, say something.

The assistant processing the handpiece may notice a change before the clinician uses it.

A quick note such as:

“HE-43 feels rougher than usual—please check before use.”

can prevent a developing problem from being overlooked.

When Should You Contact Repair.Dental?

Routine maintenance is for prevention.

Professional repair is for persistent or mechanical problems.

If the HE-43 develops:

	recurring vibration,

	unusual sound,

	unreliable bur retention,

	abnormal heat,

	resistance during rotation,

	or connection problems,

don't keep returning it to service without investigating the cause.

You can contact Repair.Dental through WhatsApp or chat to discuss the symptom, or start a W&H repair request when professional evaluation is needed.

Good maintenance isn't about making a handpiece look clean.

It's about keeping its performance predictable.
