W&H Alegra HE-43 Repair: What to Check When a Straight Handpiece Stops Feeling Right

A straight handpiece does not have to stop completely before it needs repair. With the W&H Alegra HE-43, the first warning may be much less dramatic: the handpiece feels rougher, the bur does not hold as it normally does, the sound changes, or the instrument develops unusual vibration. The HE-43 is a 1:1 straight handpiece with a twist-tension chucking system for Ø2.35 mm handpiece and contra-angle burs. It is designed for a maximum drive speed of 40,000 rpm and uses an ISO 3964 motor connection. That simple design makes one thing especially important:

A change in feel can be more useful than waiting for complete failure.

What Can Actually Go Wrong?

When a HE-43 starts behaving differently, avoid immediately assuming that the entire handpiece needs replacement.

The problem may involve the chuck, rotating components, connection, contamination, lubrication, or general mechanical wear.

If you're already seeing more than one of these symptoms, the W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Repair Guide can help you understand the broader repair process used for Alegra instruments.

Start With the Chuck

The HE-43 uses a twist-tension chucking system, so bur retention is one of the first things worth checking.

Before assuming the chuck has failed:

	Remove the bur.

Check the bur for damage or contamination.

Confirm that the correct Ø2.35 mm instrument is being used.

Test with a known-good compatible bur.

Compare how securely the bur is held.

If the problem remains with a second suitable bur, the handpiece deserves closer attention. Don't keep using a handpiece with questionable bur retention simply because it still rotates.

If you suspect a chuck or mechanical problem, you can request W&H handpiece repair and provide the exact symptom rather than waiting for complete failure.

When the Sound Changes

Clinicians often notice sound changes before anything else.

A HE-43 that develops:

	a rougher rotational sound,

	rattling,

	intermittent noise,

	unusual resistance,

	or increased vibration

should be compared with its previous normal behavior. One changed sound does not automatically identify the failed component. A technician needs to evaluate the handpiece as a system. That's why describing the symptom accurately matters.

Instead of:

“It sounds bad.”

Try:

“The HE-43 developed a rough sound during rotation and also feels slightly more resistant than before.”

That gives the repair team a much better starting point.

For additional symptom-based guidance, the W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Troubleshooting Guide can help you work through what changed before sending the instrument in.

Don't Keep Testing a Handpiece That Is Getting Hot

Heat becomes more concerning when it appears together with another mechanical symptom.

For example:

Heat + vibration

or

Heat + unusual sound

or

Heat + increased resistance

is more useful information than simply saying “the handpiece is warm.”

If the HE-43 is becoming noticeably hotter than normal, stop unnecessary chairside testing and arrange an assessment.

You can contact Repair.Dental through WhatsApp or chat and explain what you're experiencing before deciding on the next step.

Repair or Routine Maintenance?

Sometimes the answer is simply better routine care. If the problem appeared after contamination, poor processing, or an inconsistent maintenance routine, correcting the process may resolve it.

But if the same symptom:

appears → improves temporarily → returns

then don't keep repeating the same maintenance step.

Review the W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Maintenance Guide and compare your current workflow with appropriate maintenance practices.

If the symptom persists, professional inspection makes more sense than repeatedly treating the warning.

What Should You Tell the Repair Technician?

When submitting a HE-43, include:

	Exact model: Alegra HE-43

	Main problem

	When it started

	Whether the symptom is constant

Whether another compatible bur was tested

	Any vibration

	Any unusual sound

	Any increase in heat

	Whether maintenance changed the symptom

That information can save unnecessary back-and-forth.

If the HE-43 is showing persistent mechanical symptoms, start a W&H repair request rather than waiting until the handpiece fails during a procedure.

A Small Problem Is Easier to Manage Than a Dead Handpiece

The HE-43 does not need to be completely non-functional before you take action. A loose-feeling bur, new vibration, unusual sound or recurring mechanical problem is enough reason to investigate.

For general preventive-care reminders, the Simple Do's and Don'ts for Handpiece Care is also useful.

And if you're already dealing with a persistent problem, contact Repair.Dental through WhatsApp or chat or submit the handpiece for a professional assessment.

The goal is simple: identify the change before it becomes an unexpected interruption to your clinical schedule.
