W&H Alegra HE-43 Troubleshooting: 7 Questions to Ask Before You Send It for Repair

The HE-43 is working—but not quite the way it used to. That's one of the most common situations where troubleshooting becomes useful. Instead of immediately deciding that the handpiece needs a major repair, start with seven questions. The W&H Alegra HE-43 is a 1:1 straight handpiece with a twist-tension chucking system for Ø2.35 mm handpiece and contra-angle burs. It operates at a maximum drive speed of 40,000 rpm and connects according to ISO 3964.

Those specifications give you a useful starting point when something changes.

1. Is the Bur Correct?

Start with the simplest variable.

The HE-43 is designed for Ø2.35 mm handpiece and contra-angle burs.

Check:

	bur size,

	bur condition,

	shank condition,

	contamination,

	and seating.

Then try a known-good compatible bur. If the problem disappears: The original bur may have been contributing to the symptom. If the problem remains: Move on to the handpiece itself. Don't replace or repair internal components based only on the first symptom.

2. Is the Bur Being Held Normally?

Because the HE-43 uses a twist-tension chuck, bur retention deserves specific attention.

Ask:

Does the chuck feel the same as it normally does?

If it suddenly feels loose, excessively tight or inconsistent, note the change. If you continue to have retention problems with a known-good compatible bur, stop relying on the handpiece clinically until the issue is understood.

The W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Troubleshooting Guide can help you work through related Alegra chuck and performance symptoms.

3. Did the Sound Change?

A change in sound is often more useful than the volume itself.

Ask:

	Is the sound new?

	Did it appear suddenly?

	Is it present throughout rotation?

Does it occur with more than one bur?

Is vibration present at the same time?

A new sound combined with vibration is more concerning than a simple difference in sound caused by another external factor.

If the sound persists, consider professional assessment rather than repeatedly running the handpiece.

4. Is There Vibration?

Try to describe the vibration rather than simply calling it “vibration.”

Is it:

mild or strong?

constant or intermittent?

present with different burs?

getting worse?

Use this simple guide:

 Pattern

 What to do

 Only one bur

 Check/replace bur

 Several compatible burs

 Investigate handpiece

 Vibration + new sound

 Arrange assessment

 Vibration + heat

 Stop unnecessary testing

 Vibration keeps returning

 Consider repair

If you're seeing multiple symptoms together, contact Repair.Dental and explain the complete pattern rather than sending only the words “HE-43 vibrating.”

5. Is It Getting Hot?

Heat should be considered alongside the other symptoms.

For example:

Heat alone: investigate operating conditions.

Heat + vibration: stronger reason for inspection.

Heat + unusual sound: investigate promptly.

Heat + resistance: stop unnecessary use.

Don't keep running a handpiece repeatedly just tosee whether the heat becomes worse.

If the HE-43 is noticeably overheating, you can request W&H handpiece repair and provide the symptom history.

6. Did Maintenance Actually Fix It?

This question can save a lot of wasted troubleshooting.

Imagine:

HE-43 becomes noisy → maintenance → temporarily quiet → noise returns.

The temporary improvement doesn't necessarily mean the maintenance process was successful.

The recurrence may be the more important clue.

Review the W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Maintenance Guide and confirm that your routine is appropriate.

If the same mechanical symptom keeps returning, it's time to consider professional diagnosis.

7. Is the Problem Actually Getting Worse?

This is the question that determines whether you should keep troubleshooting.

Stable and minor. Monitor and review routine care.

Persistent. Investigate further.

Progressively worse. Arrange professional assessment.

Multiple symptoms together. Don't continue unnecessary testing.

At that point, the W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Repair Guide becomes more relevant than trying another random maintenance step.

What Not to Do

Avoid:

	repeatedly running a vibrating handpiece,

forcing a questionable bur into the chuck,

assuming every sound means bearing failure,

	applying unapproved products,

continuing clinical use because “it still works,”

or dismantling the handpiece without the appropriate expertise.

Give the Repair Team a Useful Description

If the HE-43 needs professional attention, send more than the model number.

A useful description might be:

“Alegra HE-43 has developed increased vibration and a rough sound. The problem occurs with two different compatible Ø2.35 mm burs and remains after routine maintenance.”

That gives the technician something to work with immediately.

If you are ready to have the instrument evaluated, start a W&H handpiece repair request.

If you aren't sure whether the symptom requires repair, contact Repair.Dental through WhatsApp or chat first and explain what you're seeing.

The Best Troubleshooting Question

Don't ask only:

“Is my HE-43 broken?”

Ask:

“What changed, when did it change, and does the same change happen under different conditions?”

That approach gives you better information, avoids unnecessary part assumptions, and helps determine when the handpiece needs professional attention.

And when the symptoms stop being minor, don't wait for complete failure to make the call.
