W&H Alegra TE-98 Maintenance: A Smarter Dental Clinic Care Routine

The difference between “we clean our handpieces” and “we maintain our handpieces properly” is consistency. A dental practice may own several turbines, use multiple assistants and process dozens of instruments every day. If each person handles a W&H TE-98 slightly differently, the maintenance routine becomes unpredictable. The solution is not necessarily a longer checklist. It is a repeatable system. The W&H Alegra TE-98 is equipped with ceramic ball bearings, triple spray and a push-button chuck. W&H specifies a 12.2 mm head, 18 W power and a nominal speed of 330,000 rpm, with compatible 1.6 mm FG burs according to ISO 1797-1. Because the TE-98 operates at high speed, small changes in handling and maintenance can matter over repeated clinical cycles.

Build the TE-98 Maintenance Loop

Think of handpiece care as a loop rather than a single task.

SELECT

Choose the correct instrument.

↓

INSPECT

Check the handpiece and instrument before use.

↓

PROCESS

Follow the manufacturer's approved cleaning and reprocessing instructions.

↓

CHECK

Notice changes in sound, vibration, spray, heat or chuck behaviour.

↓

RECORD

Document recurring abnormalities.

↓

SERVICE

Remove persistent problems from clinical rotation and arrange professional assessment. That loop prevents “maintenance” from becoming nothing more than a quick wipe before sterilization.

Step 1: Start With the Bur

A surprising number of handpiece complaints begin with the instrument rather than the turbine. W&H specifies FG burs with a 1.6 mm diameter for the TE-98. The maximum approved length varies by the applicable configuration and manufacturer specification, so staff should use the current documentation for their exact model.

Before loading:

Check	Pass	Concern
Correct bur type	✓	✕
Correct diameter	✓	✕
Appropriate length	✓	✕
No visible bending	✓	✕
No obvious damage	✓	✕
Secure retention	✓	✕

If the bur fails any relevant check, do not blame the turbine immediately. Replace or correct the instrument according to your clinical protocol.

Step 2: Give the Chuck Its Own Check

Because the TE-98 uses a push-button chuck, staff should be familiar with its normal operation.

The important question is not:

“Can the button be pressed?”

It is:

“Does the chuck behave normally and retain the correct instrument securely according to the manufacturer's instructions?”

If the answer changes, document it.

Do not:

force the button,
use improvised tools,
attempt internal adjustment,
or continue clinical use with uncertain bur retention.

If the concern persists, contact Repair.Dental for professional service guidance.

Step 3: Don't Treat Spray as an Afterthought

The TE-98 uses triple spray. Spray performance should therefore be part of the team's routine observation. You do not need to turn every procedure into a technical inspection. Instead, staff should recognize when the spray pattern has clearly changed.

The spray rule

Normal → continue routine

Changed → follow approved inspection procedure

Still abnormal → document

Abnormal + heat/vibration → stop use and seek assessment

Do not improvise by pushing sharp objects into spray outlets.

Step 4: Reprocessing Is a Process, Not One Button

The exact cleaning, lubrication, disinfection and sterilization procedure should always follow the current manufacturer's instructions for the particular TE-98 version. W&H provides maintenance solutions for its turbine handpieces, including automatic internal and external cleaning and lubrication systems such as Assistina equipment.

Your clinic should therefore make sure staff know:

which products are approved,
which maintenance steps are required,
how the handpiece should be prepared for sterilization,
which sterilization process applies,
and which person is responsible for reporting abnormalities.

Never assume that a procedure used for a different turbine is automatically correct for the TE-98.

The TE-98 “Don't Accidentally Damage It” Table

Habit	Why it can create problems
Using questionable burs	May affect retention, balance and cutting performance
Forcing the chuck	Can create unnecessary mechanical stress
Ignoring changed sound	Early warning signs can be missed
Repeatedly testing abnormal vibration	May worsen an existing problem
Improvised spray cleaning	Can damage or obstruct delicate pathways
Using unapproved products	May affect materials or internal components
Treating every turbine identically	Different models and configurations have different requirements
Continuing with excessive heat	Turns a warning sign into a clinical risk

Create a Maintenance Ownership System

In a busy practice, “someone will check it” is not a system.

Assign responsibilities.

Dental assistant

Responsible for routine handling, approved reprocessing and reporting obvious abnormalities.

Dentist/operator

Responsible for reporting changes noticed during clinical use, such as reduced performance, unusual sound or vibration.

Equipment lead

Responsible for documenting repeated issues, identifying handpieces that need service, and following up on repair requests. This creates accountability without turning maintenance into a complicated administrative task.

The TE-98 Maintenance Audit

Once your clinic has established its own appropriate review schedule, ask:

Audit question	Yes	No
Are staff using the correct TE-98 instructions?	☐	☐
Are compatible burs being used?	☐	☐
Are abnormalities being reported?	☐	☐
Are recurring problems documented?	☐	☐
Are questionable handpieces removed from service?	☐	☐
Are service records easy to locate?	☐	☐
Are staff avoiding improvised repairs?	☐	☐

A “No” answer is not a reason to blame staff. It is a sign that the workflow needs improvement.

What Does a Healthy TE-98 Routine Look Like?

A well-maintained handpiece should not require staff to constantly wonder whether it is behaving normally.

The routine should become almost automatic:

Correct bur.

Correct handling.

Correct reprocessing.

Consistent inspection.

Immediate reporting of abnormal changes.

Professional assessment when routine care no longer solves the problem.

Repair.Dental's W&H maintenance and repair information emphasizes preventive maintenance, bearing assessment, cleaning, lubrication and performance checks as part of professional handpiece care.

When Maintenance Becomes a Service Issue

Maintenance should not become an excuse for endlessly repeating the same step.

If the TE-98 continues to show:

vibration,
grinding or unusual noise,
excessive heat,
unreliable bur retention,
persistent spray problems,
or declining performance,

move from routine maintenance to professional assessment.

Use the W&H handpiece repair service or contact Repair.Dental with the model and symptom details.

A Better Maintenance Culture

The goal is not to make the dental team spend more time thinking about handpieces. It is to make good care predictable. When everyone follows the same process, abnormal behaviour becomes easier to notice. When abnormalities are documented, repair decisions become easier. And when problems are addressed before complete failure, the clinic has more control over its schedule.

Treat the TE-98 as a precision instrument, not simply another item in the sterilization tray.

Consistent care protects performance, helps identify developing problems earlier, and gives your practice a clearer path to professional service when routine maintenance is no longer enough.
