W&H Alegra WE-57 Maintenance: Protect the Chuck, Head and Daily Performance

Maintenance on the W&H Alegra WE-57 should not be treated as simply “clean, lubricate and sterilize.”

The more useful approach is to build a short inspection into the routine.

The WE-57 is a 1:1 contra-angle designed for Ø1.6 mm FG burs, with a push-button chuck and single external spray. W&H lists a maximum motor speed of 40,000 rpm and an ISO 3964 motor connection.

That means the chuck, head and spray path all deserve attention during routine care.

Make the Bur Your First Check

Before processing the handpiece, remove the bur.

Do not leave bur inspection until a performance problem appears.

Look for:

	damaged bur shanks,

	contamination,

	signs of unusual wear,

	difficulty releasing the bur,

or anything that could interfere with proper chucking.

The WE-57 is designed for Ø1.6 mm FG burs, so using the correct instrument is the first part of protecting the chuck. If bur retention already feels unusual, do not assume more lubrication will solve it. First compare the behavior with a known-good compatible bur.

Give the Push-Button Chuck a Routine Check

A good maintenance routine includes a simple question:

Does the push button feel the same as it normally does?

Notice whether the button:

	operates smoothly,

	releases the bur normally,

	feels unusually stiff,

	feels unusually loose,

or behaves differently from the other WE-57 handpieces in the practice.

A small change may be the first sign that the chuck needs attention.

If the issue persists, use the W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Troubleshooting Guide rather than repeatedly testing the handpiece during patient care.

Cleaning Is Only One Part of Maintenance

A handpiece can look clean and still require proper lubrication and inspection. Keep these tasks separate:

Cleaning: removes contamination.

Lubrication: supports the manufacturer's maintenance requirements.

Inspection: checks whether the handpiece is still behaving normally.

Following the approved W&H processing instructions for the exact model is important. W&H identifies the non-T Alegra models, including the WE-57, as approved for automated thermo washer disinfection.

For a broader model-specific routine, see the W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Maintenance Guide.

Watch the Head After Processing

After maintenance and reprocessing, do not immediately assume the handpiece is ready because the exterior looks clean.

Check how it behaves.

A quick inspection should consider:

 Check

 What you want to see

 Chuck

Smooth operation and secure bur retention

 Rotation

 Normal, consistent movement

 Sound

No new rough or abnormal noise

 Vibration

 No unexpected increase

 Spray

 Normal external delivery

 Exterior

 No obvious damage or contamination

This takes little time but can identify a developing problem before the handpiece reaches the chair.

Don't Ignore Spray Changes

The WE-57 uses a single external spray. If the spray suddenly becomes weaker or changes direction, begin with the external spray path. Look for obvious contamination or obstruction and follow the approved cleaning procedure. If the problem repeatedly returns despite proper care, document it. A recurring spray issue may need a service assessment rather than another routine cleaning cycle.

Know When Maintenance Has Reached Its Limit

Maintenance supports a functioning handpiece.

It does not repair every worn mechanical component.

If the WE-57 develops:

	persistent vibration,

	unusual noise,

	increasing heat,

	unreliable bur retention,

	rough rotation,

	or a recurring fault,

stop treating the problem as routine maintenance.

The W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Repair Guide is more relevant at that point.

If professional assessment is needed, you can request handpiece repair rather than repeatedly putting the same problematic instrument back into service.

A Simple WE-57 Handoff Routine

If several people in the practice handle the handpieces, consistency matters.

Use a simple handoff:

Remove bur → inspect chuck → clean → lubricate according to approved procedure → reprocess → inspect → test normal operation → return to service.

If anything feels different, record it rather than assuming the next person will notice it.

Maintenance Should Prevent Surprises

The purpose of WE-57 maintenance is not simply to make the handpiece look clean.

It is to keep small changes visible.

If you notice a recurring problem, contact Repair.Dental through WhatsApp, chat or the other available support options and describe what changed.

For a handpiece already showing mechanical symptoms, request a repair assessment before the issue becomes an unexpected interruption during treatment.
