W&H Alegra WE-66 Maintenance: The 5-Minute Check That Can Save a Handpiece

Most practices already have a handpiece maintenance routine.

The problem is that routines can become automatic.

Clean it.

Lubricate it.

Process it.

Put it back.

For the W&H Alegra WE-66, add one more step:

Notice how it behaves before it returns to the chair.

The WE-66 is a 4:1 contra-angle for Ø2.35 mm contra-angle burs, with a push-button chuck and single external spray.

A short inspection after routine care can help catch changes before they become repair problems.

Start With the Bur

Before processing the WE-66, remove the bur.

Check for:

	damaged shank,

	contamination,

	unusual wear,

	difficulty releasing,

anything that looks different from the burs normally used with the handpiece.

The correct compatible bur is the starting point for proper chuck performance.

If bur retention already feels unusual, don't try to correct the problem by simply adding more lubricant.

Test with a known-good compatible bur first.

For a broader maintenance routine, see the W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Maintenance Guide.

Give the Push Button a “Feel Test”

The push button should be checked routinely, not only when a bur gets stuck.

Ask:

Does it feel the same as it normally does?

Watch for:

	unusual stiffness,

	excessive looseness,

	inconsistent release,

	difficulty securing the bur,

a change in the way the button operates.

If the behavior has changed, use the W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Troubleshooting Guide to help distinguish a routine-care issue from a possible mechanical problem.

Clean Doesn't Always Mean Maintained

A handpiece can look perfectly clean and still require proper maintenance.

Think of the routine as three separate jobs:

Clean → Maintain → Inspect

Cleaning addresses contamination.

Maintenance follows the manufacturer's approved lubrication and processing requirements.

Inspection asks whether the handpiece still behaves normally.

For the WE-66, follow the manufacturer's instructions for the exact model and processing system used in your practice.

The important point is that maintenance should not replace inspection.

Listen Before You Return It to the Tray

This is one of the easiest checks to skip.

After the maintenance process, compare the WE-66 with its normal behavior.

You are not trying to diagnose an internal component by sound.

You're asking:

Has anything changed?

Normal

	smooth operation

	consistent sound

	normal vibration level

	predictable chuck operation

Worth investigating

	new roughness

	rattling

	increased vibration

	unusual resistance

	noticeably different sound

If the change remains after appropriate maintenance, don't keep adding maintenance steps.

The W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Repair Guide is more appropriate when a recurring mechanical symptom appears.

Check the Spray

The WE-66 uses a single external spray. If spray becomes weaker or changes direction, start with the external spray path. Look for obvious contamination or obstruction and follow the approved cleaning process. If the spray returns to normal, continue monitoring. If the same problem keeps returning, record it. A recurring symptom is valuable information for a repair technician.

Your WE-66 Return-to-Chair Check

Before returning the handpiece to clinical use:

 Check

 Question

 Bur

Is the correct compatible bur being used?

 Chuck

Does the push button operate normally?

 Rotation

 Does it feel smooth?

 Sound

 Is the sound normal?

 Vibration

 Has vibration changed?

 Spray

 Is spray behaving normally?

 Heat

Is there any unusual temperature change?

This takes very little time.

But it can stop a questionable handpiece from quietly returning to clinical use.

When Maintenance Starts Finding Problems

A good maintenance routine should help you notice deterioration.

If the WE-66 repeatedly develops:

	vibration,

	abnormal sound,

	heat,

	poor bur retention,

	rough rotation,

or the same fault after every maintenance cycle,

don't simply increase maintenance frequency.

That's when the W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Repair Guide becomes more relevant.

If professional assessment is needed, you can request handpiece repair and describe the recurring symptom.

Make Staff Handoffs Part of Maintenance

If several people handle the same handpiece, one simple rule can help:

If it feels different, report it.

The person processing the WE-66 may notice something that the next clinician never sees.

A quick note such as:

“WE-66 feels rougher after processing—please check before use.”

can prevent an early warning from disappearing into the daily workflow.

For broader maintenance information, staff can also refer to the W&H Alegra Contra-Angle Maintenance Guide.

Don't Let Maintenance Become a Blind Routine

The purpose of maintenance isn't simply to make the WE-66 look clean.

It is to keep its performance predictable.

If the same problem keeps returning despite correct maintenance, contact Repair.Dental through WhatsApp, chat or the available support options.

If the handpiece needs professional attention, submit a repair request instead of repeatedly returning a questionable instrument to service.
