The HK-43 LT and HG-43 A are thermo-washer-disinfectable and sterilizable, with an integrated, maintenance-free spray filter built in. The routine is straightforward, but one specific lubrication mistake shows up again and again across W&H's handpiece range, and it's worth understanding before you touch a lubricant can.

The Lubrication Hole That Actually Matters

W&H specifies its Service Oil F1, a synthetic oil developed specifically for W&H turbine, straight, and contra-angle handpieces for lubrication. The critical detail: only the air line of the drive should be lubricated, since that's what directs oil to the internal bearings. Lubricating the wrong opening, such as the exhaust or water channel, can cause serious functional damage.

Confirm which port is the air-line drive connection before applying any lubricant

Use W&H Service Oil F1, or the cartridge system in an Assistina unit if your practice has one

Never guess at the correct port; check your specific model's instructions for use first

Worth knowing: after lubricating, run the handpiece briefly before sterilizing it. Skipping this step lets the lubricant sit and thicken inside the bearings during autoclaving, effectively gumming up the mechanism instead of protecting it, turning a maintenance step into the cause of a future repair.

Cleaning Before Disinfection

Wipe away visible debris before running the thermo-disinfection cycle, not as a substitute for it. W&H's integrated maintenance-free spray filter reduces buildup in the water line, but the exterior surfaces and chuck area still benefit from a manual check. Print Shipping Label

Common Maintenance Mistakes

Lubricating the wrong port

The single most-cited W&H handpiece maintenance error: always confirm the air-line drive connection first.

Skipping the post-lubrication run

Leaves oil to thicken in the bearings during sterilization instead of properly coating them.

Substituting a chemical wipe-down for thermo-disinfection

Doesn't meet the validated hygiene process W&H's instructions specify.

Using non-approved lubricants or accessories

Voids the warranty and isn't tested against W&H's own specifications.

FAQ

Q. What lubricant does W&H recommend?

A. W&H Service Oil F1, a synthetic oil developed specifically for W&H turbine, straight, and contra-angle handpieces.

Q. How do I know which port is the correct one to lubricate?

A. Check your specific model's official instructions for use it's the air line of the drive, not the exhaust or water channel.

Q. Does the maintenance-free spray filter mean I never need to check it?

A. It reduces routine maintenance needs, but persistent water flow issues are still worth a visual check and, if needed, a technician's evaluation.
