W&H Synea Fusion WG-99 A Maintenance: What to Protect Every Day

A good maintenance routine for the W&H Synea Fusion WG-99 A is not about doing more to the handpiece.

It is about doing the right things consistently.

The WG-99 A is a 1:5 contra-angle for Ø1.6 mm FG burs, with a push-button chuck and Quattro Spray. W&H lists a maximum motor speed of 40,000 rpm. Unlike the WG-99 LT, the WG-99 A is the non-light version, so its daily care does not include a glass-rod illumination system.

That difference matters.

Instead of treating the WG-99 A like a generic handpiece, build the maintenance routine around the parts that are actually doing the work.

What Needs Protection?

Think of the handpiece as four working areas:

Area	What you are protecting
Chuck	Secure bur retention
Head and gearing	Smooth transmission
Spray system	Reliable cooling
External body	Cleanliness and physical condition

The objective is simple:

Keep contamination out, keep the mechanical systems protected, and notice changes before they become failures.

1. Start With the Bur

The WG-99 A is designed for Ø1.6 mm FG burs. A maintenance routine begins before the motor is even switched on. Use a suitable bur and inspect it before insertion. A bur that is bent, damaged, or excessively worn can introduce vibration and unnecessary load into the handpiece.

Quick bur check

Correct size?

Straight?

Undamaged?

Properly inserted?

Securely retained?

Do not use the handpiece as a way of testing whether a questionable bur is still usable.

2. Treat the Chuck as a Working Mechanism

The push-button chuck is operated repeatedly throughout the day. That means it deserves the same attention as any other moving component. Press the button normally. Insert the bur without forcing it. Release the button and confirm that the bur is held securely.

Avoid:

pressing the button unnecessarily during rotation,
forcing a bur into the chuck,
continuing with a bur that does not seat correctly,
using the handpiece when retention has become unreliable.

W&H specifically highlights easy bur changes and the push-button chuck system as features of the Synea Fusion range. If the chuck begins behaving differently, treat that as a maintenance warning rather than something to work around.

3. Keep the Spray System Working

The WG-99 A uses Quattro Spray, designed to provide cooling from four directions. This means spray performance should become part of the normal pre-use check.

Look for:

a consistent spray pattern,
adequate water delivery,
blocked or abnormal outlets,
changes from the handpiece's normal behavior.

The WG-99 A also has an integrated maintenance-free spray filter, according to W&H.

Do not improvise with aggressive tools or cleaning methods around spray components. Use the manufacturer's approved maintenance procedure.

4. Don't Turn Cleaning Into Damage

Cleaning is necessary. Aggressive cleaning is not. After use, follow the current W&H hygiene and maintenance instructions for the WG-99 A. Use the products and process approved for the instrument. Do not assume that a cleaner, lubricant, or reprocessing method suitable for another handpiece is automatically suitable for this one.

For a broader reminder of good handpiece-care practices, see RepairGuru's Simple Do's and Don'ts for Handpiece Care. The general principles are useful, but the current W&H instructions remain the authority for model-specific processing.

5. Lubrication Has a Purpose

Lubrication should not be treated as simply “adding oil.” The objective is to protect the appropriate internal components and chuck while following the manufacturer's procedure. Too little attention can contribute to wear. Too much or incorrectly applied lubricant can create its own problems. Follow the W&H instructions for the WG-99 A and use the approved maintenance products and method.

If your clinic uses multiple electric handpieces, RepairGuru's electric handpiece maintenance guide provides additional general maintenance principles for cleaning, lubrication, optics, and sterilization preparation.

6. Reprocessing Is Part of Mechanical Care

Sterilization is not a separate issue from handpiece longevity. The WG-99 A is designed to be thermo washer disinfected and sterilized when processed according to the applicable manufacturer's instructions. The important point is to follow the current W&H procedure, including the approved cleaning, lubrication, reprocessing, and sterilization parameters.

Do not guess. Do not increase temperatures or exposure times because you assume “more sterilization is better.” Follow the procedure specified for the instrument.

7. Protect the Head

The head of a contra-angle takes the working load of the bur.

Treat it carefully during:

bur changes,
cleaning,
tray handling,
reprocessing,
storage.

Do not drop the handpiece onto a metal tray. Do not use the head as a point of leverage. Do not place heavy instruments on it. Small impacts can become much more expensive problems if they affect the chuck, gearing, or rotating assembly.

8. Know What “Normal” Feels Like

Maintenance is easier when you have a baseline.

A healthy WG-99 A should have a familiar:

sound

rotation

bur retention

spray pattern

temperature

If one of these gradually changes, make a note of it.

You do not need to wait for a complete failure before investigating.

W&H's own maintenance guidance emphasizes correct care and processing, while RepairGuru's W&H handpiece maintenance tips also highlights the importance of recognizing early warning signs.

The End-of-Day WG-99 A Routine

Before the handpiece goes into its next processing cycle, think through:

BUR

☐ Appropriate Ø1.6 mm FG bur removed
☐ No visible damage to the bur

CHUCK

☐ Push button operates normally
☐ No unusual looseness
☐ No retention concern

SPRAY

☐ Spray behavior was normal
☐ No persistent cooling problem

BODY

☐ Exterior cleaned according to instructions
☐ No obvious impact damage

REPROCESSING

☐ Correct W&H procedure followed
☐ Approved lubrication used where required
☐ Sterilization performed according to instructions

When Maintenance Becomes a Repair Issue

There is a point where routine care should stop and diagnosis should begin.

That point is reached when the WG-99 A repeatedly shows:

vibration,
abnormal noise,
rough rotation,
unreliable bur retention,
unusual heat,
persistent spray problems,
or physical damage.

Cleaning cannot repair worn bearings.

Lubrication cannot correct damaged gearing.

Reprocessing cannot restore a damaged chuck.

When the underlying component has worn or failed, professional inspection is required.

Repair.Dental's W&H handpiece repair service covers mechanical problems such as bearing wear, vibration, chuck failure, overheating, water/air issues, and gear wear.

The Maintenance Rule Worth Remembering

You do not need a complicated routine.

You need a consistent one:

USE IT CORRECTLY → CLEAN IT CORRECTLY → REPROCESS IT CORRECTLY → CHECK IT → ACT WHEN SOMETHING CHANGES

That is what protects the WG-99 A over repeated clinical use. And when maintenance can no longer explain or correct a change in performance, do not keep testing the handpiece chairside.

Move from maintenance to diagnosis.
