Synea Turbine Maintenance Guide: Daily, Weekly & Monthly Care

Both W&H Synea lines, Vision and Fusion, are built with ceramic ball bearings, a Hygiene Head system, and W&H's ScratchBlocker surface coating, features designed for durability and infection control. Following W&H's hygiene and maintenance guidance, based on EN ISO 17664, keeps that durability intact. Think of the routine below as three simple layers: daily, weekly, and monthly.

A scratch-resistant coating protects the surface. It doesn't protect a turbine that skips its sterilization cycle.

Layer One: Daily Care (Every Single Use)

This is the layer that matters most for keeping a Synea turbine reliable day-to-day.

DAILY CHECKLIST

☐ Confirm the bur is fully seated and the push-button chuck grips securely before use

☐ Wipe down the exterior immediately after use, before debris dries

☐ Confirm your turbine carries the correct sterilization symbol before autoclaving it

☐ Sterilize using a validated cycle appropriate for that specific turbine

☐ Confirm thermal disinfection is only used if the turbine carries the relevant thermal disinfection symbol, with a drying cycle

Layer Two: Weekly Care

WEEKLY CHECKLIST

☐ Check that the turbine seats and releases smoothly from the coupling using the Click and Pull system

☐ Inspect the ScratchBlocker-coated surface for any damage that could affect cleaning

☐ Listen for any new bearing noise while running the turbine without a bur

☐ Confirm chucks are still gripping burs securely under normal use

Layer Three: Monthly Care

MONTHLY CHECKLIST

☐ Test rotation speed against the expected range for your specific model

☐ Review sterilization cycle logs to confirm consistent reprocessing

☐ Rotate turbines in active use, so wear is distributed evenly across your inventory

☐ Confirm drive air pressure at your delivery unit still matches the specification for your coupling type

The Care Map: Four Zones Worth Watching

It helps to think of Synea turbine care in four zones:

Bearings & Rotor

Protected primarily through correct sterilization and avoiding excessive drive air pressure, rather than manual lubrication of the bearings themselves.

Push-Button Chuck

Benefits from staying free of dried debris; a quick wipe and visual check keeps the push-button action smooth.

Coupling Connection

Whether Roto Quick, Multiflex, or a 6-hole connection, this is worth a regular check for wear, since it also carries drive air and, on LED models, power.

ScratchBlocker Surface

A scratch-free surface is easier to clean thoroughly, so protecting the coating supports both appearance and hygiene.

Cleaning and Reprocessing: Following the Symbols

W&H's guidance is specific: a Synea turbine can be processed in a sterilizer only if it carries the relevant sterilization symbol, and only be processed via a thermal disinfector if it carries the corresponding thermal disinfection symbol, with the disinfector using a drying cycle. Checking for these symbols rather than assuming every turbine reprocesses the same way is a simple habit that protects the equipment.

Lubrication and Reprocessing Devices

W&H offers dedicated reprocessing accessories, including Service Oil F1 and the Assistina Twin reprocessing device, designed to handle lubrication and maintenance for W&H handpieces as part of a validated workflow. Using W&H's own reprocessing guidance and compatible accessories helps ensure a turbine is cared for the way it was engineered to be maintained.

Storage Between Uses

Store turbines in a dedicated holder rather than loose in a drawer, where the coupling connection and any LED contacts are more likely to get scratched or knocked. Since Vision and Fusion turbines aren't interchangeable, clearly organized storage also helps staff grab the correct model for the coupling in use.Print Shipping Label

Maintenance Mistakes to Avoid

A side-by-side look at habits worth changing:

INSTEAD OF	TRY THIS
Autoclaving a turbine without checking for the sterilization symbol	Confirm the correct symbol is present before choosing a reprocessing method
Assuming thermal disinfection works the same as sterilization	Use thermal disinfection only where the specific symbol is present, with a drying cycle
Pulling hard on a turbine that won't release from the coupling	Check that the retention sleeve retracts smoothly before applying more force
Ignoring minor bearing noise	Have it checked promptly, since bearing wear tends to progress
Letting debris dry on the ScratchBlocker surface before wiping down	Wipe down immediately after use, before buildup has a chance to harden

Extending the Lifespan of Your Synea Turbine

Consistent reprocessing that follows W&H's symbols and guidance, combined with prompt attention to noise or performance changes, does more for a turbine's lifespan than any single product choice. If a well-maintained turbine still starts showing signs of wear, that's the point to bring in a technician rather than continuing to use it. Our Synea Turbine Repair & Service Guide covers what happens once a repair, rather than routine maintenance, is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every Synea turbine go in an autoclave?

Only if it carries the relevant sterilization symbol. Checking for that symbol before reprocessing is part of W&H's own guidance.

What's the difference between sterilization and thermal disinfection for these turbines?

They're separate processes with separate symbols. A turbine needs the specific thermal disinfection symbol, and the disinfector needs a drying cycle, before that method is appropriate.

Do I need special products to maintain a Synea turbine?

W&H offers Service Oil F1 and the Assistina Twin reprocessing device as part of their own maintenance accessories, designed to work with their handpieces.

Why won't my turbine come off the coupling smoothly?

This usually points to the retention sleeve rather than the turbine itself. Forcing it can cause damage, so it's worth checking that the sleeve retracts smoothly first.

What's the single most important maintenance habit?

Following the specific sterilization and thermal disinfection symbols on your turbine, rather than assuming a one-size-fits-all reprocessing approach, protects the equipment most effectively.
