Blue or Cool Cast: What It Means

A blue-tinted image makes tissue look pale and lifeless. Teeth may appear unnaturally icy white.

Common Causes of a Blue Cast

White balance stuck on a cool preset, often after a software update or profile change.
LED illumination degradation, where the warm-spectrum output fades and leaves a cooler imbalance.
Sensor channel drift, in which the red channel under-reports relative to blue.

Red or Pink Cast: What It Means

A red or pink tint makes gingiva look inflamed even when it is healthy, which can compromise diagnostic confidence.

Common Causes of a Red or Pink Cast

Incorrect white balance calibration against a non-neutral reference.
Disinfectant or fluid residue on the lens or tip, altering light transmission.
Moisture intrusion that affects the sensor or its connections.
Failing LED output skewing toward the red end of the spectrum.

Purple or Magenta Cast: What It Means

A purple or magenta cast is often the most telling symptom, because it suggests an imbalance between the green channel and the red and blue channels.

Why Magenta Appears

Green channel suppression caused by a sensor fault.
Damaged internal cable or connector disrupting color data transmission.
Failing image processor inside the handpiece or control module.
Lens coating degradation from impact or repeated exposure.

Software rarely produces a clean magenta cast on its own. If it appears in both live and saved images, treat it as a probable hardware fault. Many users bring in Carestream units with this symptom after a drop or cable strain.

Globally Incorrect Colors, Washed-Out Images and Color Distortion

Sometimes there is no single dominant tint. Instead, colors look inverted, desaturated, patchy or inconsistent from frame to frame.

Colors shifting while the camera is held still.
Horizontal banding or color streaks.
Image quality that changes when the cable is flexed.
