Why Your Intraoral Camera Previews Fine but Won't Capture Images

If your intraoral camera shows a crisp live feed but the intraoral camera won't capture image when you press the button, you have already learned something valuable. The sensor, lens, cable and USB video path are all delivering data. The fault sits somewhere in the capture chain, not in the "camera not working" category.

That distinction saves time and money. The technicians at Repair.Dental see this pattern daily, and it narrows the diagnosis to a handful of components.

Why a Working Preview Narrows the Fault So Much

A live preview proves that the imaging sensor, lens assembly, internal cabling and video data path are functioning. A dead or flickering feed points to hardware or connection loss. A healthy feed with failed capture points to the trigger and save path instead.

Here is what a working preview effectively rules out:

Sensor failure or severe sensor errors
Broken lens or fluid-damaged optics (usually visible in the preview)
A completely severed or disconnected USB cable
A camera that is not recognized by the computer at all

That leaves the capture chain. If your dental camera works but won't take a picture, the problem is almost always in one of five links.

Intraoral Camera Works in Preview but Won’t Capture Images on Repair Guru

The Capture Chain: Five Links Where Capture Fails

Every captured image travels the same route. A break at any point produces the same symptom: preview works, no image saved.

Link	Component	What It Does	Typical Failure
1	Physical capture button	Detects the press	Worn switch, dirt or fluid inside the handpiece
2	Button command	Sends the signal to the computer	Broken signal wire, loose internal connection
3	Driver/interface	Passes the command to the OS	Outdated, corrupt or mismatched driver
4	Imaging software	Receives the command and grabs a frame	Wrong capture device, trigger setting off, software conflict
5	Image-save process	Writes the file to the patient record	Full storage, permissions, broken database path

Working through these in order isolates the fault faster than random troubleshooting.

Link 1: The Physical Capture Button

The button is a mechanical switch, and it takes more abuse than any other part of the handpiece. Repeated presses, disinfectant wipes and sterilization-related moisture all wear it down.

Signs the button itself is failing:

No click or tactile feedback when pressed
Capture works only when you press at a certain angle or very hard
Capture works intermittently, then stops
Visible residue or swelling around the button area

A failed switch is a hardware repair, not a settings issue. Replacing it with the correct OEM component is the reliable fix.

Link 2: The Button Command Signal

Even when the button feels normal, the signal may never leave the handpiece. The capture command travels through separate conductors from the video signal, so one can fail while the other keeps working.

Common causes include:

A loose internal solder joint or connector near the handpiece
Cable stress near the strain relief where the cord bends repeatedly
Fluid exposure that corrodes contacts without affecting video

A quick test: press the button while watching for any response in the software, such as a flicker, a freeze-frame or a capture sound. No reaction at all suggests the command never arrives.

Link 3: Driver and Interface Problems

The driver translates the button press into a command the operating system understands. After a Windows update, a new USB port assignment or a workstation swap, the video driver may load while the button-event driver does not.

Check these items:

Device Manager for warning icons or "unknown device" entries
Whether the camera is plugged into a different USB port than before
Whether a recent update preceded the problem
Whether a reinstall of the manufacturer driver restores capture

If a clean driver reinstall fixes it, you have a software mismatch. If not, move to the next link.

Link 4: Imaging Software Configuration

This is the most common cause of a dental imaging software camera problem. The software may display video from the camera but not be configured to accept its button as a capture trigger.

Symptom	Likely Software Cause	Quick Check
Button does nothing, on-screen capture works	Hardware trigger disabled	Review acquisition settings
Capture works on one workstation only	Wrong device or profile selected	Compare camera source settings
Started after an update	Compatibility conflict	Check release notes and version
Preview freezes but nothing saves	Capture module error	Restart and re-test acquisition

A useful diagnostic: try capturing with the on-screen button or a keyboard shortcut. If that works, the software and save path are healthy, and the physical button or command signal becomes the prime suspect.

Our team supports all major platforms, including DEXIS, Schick and Carestream cameras.

Link 5: The Image-Save Process

Sometimes capture succeeds but the image never lands in the patient chart. If dental camera images are not saving, the cause is usually outside the camera.

Look for:

Full or nearly full local or network storage
Lost permissions on the image folder
A disconnected database or server path
No patient record open when you capture

Test by capturing from another device, if available. If a second camera saves normally on the same workstation, the save path is fine and the original camera is at fault.

A Five-Minute Diagnostic Sequence

Run these steps in order before calling for service:

Restart the imaging software and the workstation
Try the on-screen capture control
Switch USB ports and check Device Manager
Confirm storage space and folder permissions
Test the camera on a second workstation

If the camera still fails to capture on a second computer, the fault is in the handpiece, almost certainly the button or its signal path. This is exactly where Repair.Dental can save you hours of guesswork. See our FAQ for common questions, or call us for guidance.

When It's Time for Professional Repair

Once software and driver causes are ruled out, continuing to troubleshoot costs chair time. Pressing harder on a failing button can also damage the switch further. Camera-side faults require disassembly, component-level diagnosis and OEM parts.

We also repair Planmeca, Acteon/Midmark, Digital Doc and Air Techniques cameras, so whichever brand is in your operatory, the process is the same.
