RVG stands for RadioVisioGraphy. It is a digital radiography system which uses different types of sensors to capture a high-quality digital x-ray image. Digital radiography has almost completely replaced traditional X-ray films in modern dentistry. This includes high-quality digital images of the bone, tooth and surrounding structures.

In this article, we will discuss one of the main components used in RVG sensors for capturing images.

 

There are basically two main types of sensors- CCD (charge-coupled device) and CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor). Both sensors function in a very similar way. However, The technology used to convert X-rays into digital images is different in both sensors.

 

CCD sensors were the first type of sensors used in RVG technology. These sensors are composed of a silicon chip, which is coated with a layer of photoelectric material that absorbs X-rays. When an X-ray passes through the sensor, it is absorbed by the photoelectric material, causing it to release electrons. These electrons are then converted into an electrical signal, which is processed by the sensor's software to create a digital image.

 

CCD sensors have several advantages, including high sensitivity, low noise, and excellent image quality. However, they are also more expensive to manufacture and can be easily damaged by exposure to light or heat. As a result, they are less commonly used in modern RVG sensors.

 

CMOS sensors are the newer type of sensors used in RVG technology. These sensors also contain a silicon chip, but instead of a layer of photoelectric material, they contain a matrix of photodiodes. When an X-ray passes through the sensor, it is absorbed by the photodiodes, which generate an electrical charge. The charge is then converted into a digital signal by the sensor's software, which is used to create a digital image.

 

CMOS sensors have several advantages over CCD sensors, including lower power consumption, lower manufacturing costs, and higher resistance to damage from exposure to light or heat. They also produce high-quality images with low noise levels, making them ideal for dental applications.
